Lo-fi angst-pop from Columbus, Ohio? Ya don’t say! This Midwest trio’s keyboard/drum/guitar squall is sloppy, poppy Pollard worship read more..
Given the democratization of music production afforded by Pro Tools, anyone can sound polished these days. It takes a real artist, though, to sound deliberately fucked up, to embrace the scratchy lo-fi aesthetic of early-’90s bands like Pavement and Guided By Voices and release albums that sound as if they were recorded on boom boxes held together with duct tape. Columbus’ Times New Viking’s aloofness and refusal (or inability) to kowtow to quality standards has shrouded the band in intriguing mystery, making it all the more seductive. So seductive, in fact, that Matador snapped the band up right away based on the strength of two gritty, cassette-only releases and sent them out for a supporting tour with scene progenitors Yo La Tengo.
