I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness

I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness are an band formed in 2002, based out of Austin, Texas. I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness is often associated with the band Spoon, and Spoon’s lead singer, Britt Daniel, even produced their first album. The resulting EP, I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness, was a 5-song EP released under Emperor Jones Records in 2003. This was followed with a 2-song 12” EP in 2005. The band consists of Ernest Salaz, Christian Goyer, Edward Robert, Tim White, with the addition of guitarist Daniel Del Favero after the release of their debut EP. In March 2006 the band released their full-length debut Fear Is on Our Side on Secretly Canadian, based out of Bloomington, IN. The official site is http://www.chosendarkness.com/ Listen at Last.fm
They’ve been one of Austin’s best-kept secrets for years, but with their release of their 2006 debut long-player, Fear Is On Our Side, I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness has been swept up in a wave of media acclaim. The well-monikered outfit, which features former members of Windsor for the Derby and Glorium in its ranks, are purveyors of the newly tagged doom pop scene, so named for its love of gloomy vocals and synthy back lines. Appropriate, then, that ex-Ministry bassist Paul Barker produced their new album.

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness belongs to a different genus of indie rock, one that I mentally file as S.I.R., or "Serious Indie Rock." Exemplified by bands like Interpol, Calla, and, to an extent, grandiose yet traditionally narrative post-rock outfits like Explosions in the Sky, this style of indie eschews irony, pop culture trawling, and genre hopscotch. It's reverent, recondite, and stylistically consistent. more at www.pitchforkmedia.com
