#7 Of all the notable qualities that make El-P‘s Cancer 4 Cure a 2012 stand-out–articulate anger, unrelentingly original beats, post-apocalyptic anxieties–impeccable timing has to be counted near the top of the list...full article here

#45 El-P's 2012 collaboration with Killer Mike, R.A.P. Music, was the hard left hook to the jaw, but his solo record Cancer for Cure was the body blow-- the one that rumbled your guts, left you sickened and confused. Solitude has always suited El-P, and on this record, he emerged from it with a record so dense and internal that it was impossible to discern the hum of the machines from the hum of his mind...full article here

#35 Any performer with Oscar ambitions should “never go full retard”, warns Robert Downey Jr.‘s Kirk Lazarus in 2008’s Tropic Thunder. Prestige culture was the target, but outcry from disability activists was the response, leading to pickets and memes before reemerging as lead single “The Full Retard” of El-P’s Cancer 4 Cure...full article here

#20 Cancer For Cure opens with a sample of William S. Burroughs reading his 1961 novel, The Soft Machine, and I doubt there could be a more appropriate author for El Producto to invoke. full article here

Artist: El-P Album: I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead Label: Definitive Jux Genre: Rap/Hip Hop Rating: Buy it >>

Imagine if El-P were a comic book superhero. Which would he be? He could be just about any of the postmodern comic heroes who possess amazing gifts to make positive change on the world, but can’t get their mind right in order to fight their own manic tendencies. With power comes great responsibility, and El-Producto completely lets loose irresponsibly in classic form without claim.

El-P is hands down one of the most original cats in the hip-hop game and shows all his cards all the time. The honesty of his words is his super strength, but it’s also his krypto. Fortunately for us listeners, it’s the truth we crave and the reason why we appreciate his voice in the game. Too bad for him, but his honesty leaves his ass bare in the wind for everyone to look at. He’s an interesting bum, however. El-P drops mad crazy flows in ways over beats that are completely unprecedented. Not to mention the aesthetics and delivery, the personality behind it is fresh and deep, like a sci-fi apocalypse cosmo twist.

Album "Cancer for Cure" scored 8.5

El-P's first album since putting Def Jux on hiatus in early 2010 marks a break from the old order and another call to arms. Dark, heavy, and richly rendered, Cancer 4 Cure is both reinvention and in...
